The Running of the Bulls fiesta in Pamplona, Spain has an iconic uniform that just about everyone wears. Wearing this outfit will help you feel the spirit of the fiesta and look the part. Here's everything you'll need:
- A white shirt: You can wear a T-shirt, long sleeve shirt, crop top, button-down, Hawaiian shirt - anything, as long as it's white! You can bring your own, or you can buy one when you arrive in Pamplona. Beware: whatever shirt you wear will probably end up stained pink with sangria by the end of the festival.
- Comfortable white pants: Generally, festival-goers wear pants rather than shorts, skirts, or dresses during the Running of the Bulls. The festival is messy, and it's certainly not a fashion show. Loose, white linen pants are usually the best option to comfortably run, dance, and party during the San Fermín fiesta.
- A red scarf, or pañuelo: Throughout the festival, you'll wear a red scarf called a pañuelo around your neck. This is a square piece of red fabric, often with an engraved emblem in one corner. Keep it tied around your wrist until noon on July 6th. Once the chupinazo rocket sounds, fold it over once diagonally, then tie the corners around your neck. Dozens of shops sell pañuelos throughout the Old Quarter of Pamplona.
- A red sash, or faja: The faja is a long, woven piece of red fabric with an engraved emblem at the end. You can buy one on just about any street in the Old Quarter. Depending on how long your faja is, wrap it around your waist once or twice, then tie it on the left side. If you're running with the bulls, practice tying your faja in a slipknot - you don't want a bull's horn to get caught in your sash!
